Was this just a bad translation. Would it have been better in Russian?? The author knew her Russian history so it was good in that sense but it was so predictable. Every experience went in a predictable loop to the reintroduction of a character early in the book to a "not so" surprise return as to how they were connected by someone else later.
It may have been her first novel and if so I give her credit for having all the elements there but by the end I was tired and though it was obvious what had happened I did go ahead and finish it. Happy to move on though and I don't think this is an author I'll be returning to.

Loved it! Kept me on the edge of my seat ... one of those books that you don't want to end. Thick book, but a short read. Definitely recommend it.
The history is interesting but it's such a cliff-hanger soap opera kind of thing if that's what you like. Sometimes the story line is a bit redundant as you read through the 2nd book. Women had fewer options than they have today. Ok but not great literature.
This novel is fast-pased, full of adventure, heroism, romance and heart-pounding, cliff-hanging dangers. The young heroine is abruptly thrust from her protective home into a hostile and dangerous world, as the events of the Crimean War unfold. The author has a unique insight into the time and place in which the novel is set. Her use of vocabulary and sentence construction conveys perfectly the Eastern European culture in the mid-19th century, and is a wonderful literary device that draws the reader back into another time and place. As the beautiful heroine moves from place to place, she manages to extricate herself from a series of dangerous situations, while growing from a young innocent into a mature woman who is aware of her intrinsic value. She is pursued by a dangerous and obsessive admirer, but still manages to provide comfort and aid to all whose path she crosses. A very fast-paced and exciting read. By way of a side benefit, the reader also receives an excellent treatise on the history of the Crimean War, especially from the Russian perspective, a piece of history not well-known. Highly recommended.
Sorry, not for me. I could not make it past the first few pages. The writing was insane. We have a Russian policeman who is referred to as a gendarme (now we are in France?) and refers to the young female protagonist as "Lassie" so now we are in Scotland? I don't care who translated or who proofread this one. If the first few pages make me this crazy, I cannot waste the time to carry on and hope there is a story behind the ridiculousness. A few other reviews said this was historically accurate, but I will never know. Too turned off by these glaring errors. If you can't stay on one continent in the same sentence, you lose my readership. Better luck with your other books.
